DIY Pillar Candle Holders

My crafty husband made me an entryway table a few days ago and I absolutely love it! But while he was making it, I was lost as to what to put on it. I didn’t have a great deal of extra money so I had to do what I do best. Find a cheap, DIY way to decorate the table. One thing I noticed in the pictures I was searching on Pinterest was that most of the entry way tables had these beautiful pillar candle holders. I wanted one… No, I needed one. I also needed a new DIY project to write about. So I gave myself a budget of $7 since I could order one online for around that cost. The next time my husband had to run to the hardware store I was going to tag along and grab a few supplies for myself.

I did an inventory and realized I had several items already needed: paint and E6000. If you have never used E6000, you should look into it. It will glue anything to anything and easier to use than epoxy. That gave me a little more wiggle room in my budget. I ended up not needing it. Lowes had the leg piece for $3 and small planter discs for $.97. Woohoo!

Once we got home, and my husband was done rolling his eyes at me, I took the screw off the bottom of the table leg and sanded the top and bottom just a little. I wanted to have the surface not completely smooth so that the glue would have a bit more to grip onto. I also sanded the bottom of the planter discs. One discs I glued upside down on the bottom of the leg and the other right-side up on the top. The only problem I have with E6000 glue is it does take 24 hours to cure. Patience is not one of my strengths.

Once cured, I painted the whole thing white. I didn’t like it. Too boring. I wanted it to pop a bit but I didn’t want it to be the focal point of the décor. Trying to keep it cheap, I looked through all my paints (is it weird that I have at least 10 spray paint colors on hand at any time?), and I found just what I needed. Gold spray paint. I didn’t cover the whole pillar but sprayed it at a distance and let it spatter where it would.
Also, after looking around a little more, I found several sets of similar candle holders that ran from $13 a piece to $45. Now, those ones were all wood but I could have easily bought wood for the top and bottom pieces and have stayed close to my budget. I did like the curve on the planter discs though.

  1. Those are so cute! And they look easy to make, too. Plus you can paint them any color. What a fun idea!
